J.R. Jones is a peculiar grassroots artist who has been dazzling intrigued fans over the years with a gritty bluesy approach that is truly captured through his gripping songs and powerful live performances. Learning the ropes from the influence of RL Burnside, Tom Waits and The Carter Family, the self-taught Brooklyn-based musician has welded a defining style that is haunting yet delightful. Performing under the name The Bones Of J.R. Jones, his forthcoming effort, Dark Was The Yearling, is a unique entity that captures the soothing spirit of folk with an introspective variety.

Jones captivates listeners with a series of arrangements throughout that spontaneously alternate back and forth with a blissful mixture of essential folk delivery that leaves a wondrous impression for you to linger upon. Because of Jones’ eccentric sound, it could be difficult to fit his music into one category.

“Dreams To Tell” starts and ends this release with a fascinating reprise that draws you in with a barren Westernized sensation that leads into the rocking chords and toe-tapping thrill of the leading single “Good Friend Of Mine.” Transitioning from a raw and ironically eerie setting conveyed within the first half of the record, we are also introduced to angelic ballads like “The Dark,” “Fury Of The Light” and “The Plan” that touch upon themes of yearning desires and prolonged wanting.

Dark Was The Yearling is an interesting outlet that captures the grotesquely exciting aspects of blues and folk that have been championed by Jones’ precursors. With a heartfelt lyrical prose that invites you with a desolate and powerful tone, this is an essential album that keeps you at the edge of your seat. By embracing diverse and vibrant elements of folk and blues throughout the musical interpretation of Dark Was The Yearling is loosely based on the listener’s imagination. ~By Ryan McGrath

Asylum Street Spankers - The Last Laugh

If you've read the bio or heard the story of the Asylum Street Spankers, you probably know that the group was founded in 1994 at a booze-filled party at the Dabbs Hotel along the river in Llano, Texas, and for the next seventeen years left a swath of astounded audiences in its wake. Well, it appears that America's favorite old-time hellraisers have once again musically triumphed over overindulgence and memory loss. Or have they?

Christina Marrs, Nevada Newman, Charlie King and the other Spankers do recall getting together to play their final shows ever in April of 2011. They all remember setting up the three-day "Last Laugh" finale in their hometown of Austin, Texas at the Cactus Café, Ruta Maya and Spider House Ballroom. But, honestly, that's the last thing any of them remember.

Look: it's embarrassing for such an acclaimed band as this to have to admit that they honestly don't remember where their final album came from. What becomes clear upon listening to these recordings is that none of these songs has ever been recorded by the Asylum Street Spankers before. What's even clearer is this: the band is in their finest form ever here, living up to their firmly cemented reputation as an acoustic powerhouse. Who else can blend string-band virtuosity, multi-instrumental skills, tight vocal harmonies and counterculture wit like this?

Clearly, these were unforgettable nights for all those who packed the clubs and cheered on their internationally beloved hometown heroes. Hazily, the Spankers figure these must have been some of the most treasured personal moments of their 17-year career. Imagine the satisfaction of taking their fans through one last journey together, from the Tin Pan Alley and vaudeville echoes of their sound, through the country, blues, jazz and swing songs they've borrowed and created, all filtered through the punk-rock ethos at their core. "It must really have been something," Christina muses.

Dave Van Ronk - Down in Washington Square (3 disk set)

Styles: British Folk, Folk Revival, Folk-Blues
Label: Folkways
Released: 2013
Art: full

Notes: Called “The Mayor of MacDougal Street,” Dave Van Ronk (1936-2002) was a leading figure in the Greenwich Village music scene for more than four decades. He epitomized the urban “folksinger”— apprenticing through immersion in the music revival’s New York City epicenter of Washington Square Park. Drawing from and developing a wide repertoire of songs, guitar techniques, and performing skills, he mentored younger musicians and songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Jack Hardy, Suzanne Vega, Christine Lavin, and many others. Down in Washington Square includes 16 never-before-released recordings coupled with tracks from the Smithsonian Folkways archive, spanning early live recordings made in 1958 (one year before his first Folkways album) to his final studio recordings in 2001, just months before his death. It paints a musical mosaic of Van Ronk’s artistry and expands his legacy, keeping alive the genius of a legendary performer who inspired audiences, musicians, and a major motion picture — Inside Llewyn Davis, written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Three CD box set, 54 tracks, nearly three hours of music, 40-page booklet with extensive notes.~Folkways
The very template of the urban folk singer in the late '50s and early '60s, Dave Van Ronk was born and grew up in Brooklyn, learning to play ukulele, banjo, and guitar at an early age. Initially drawn to jazz, he was influenced, like so many others, by Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, and began spending time at the famous impromptu Washington Square Park folk jam sessions. He developed a gruff, bluesy, intelligent, and authentic-sounding urban folk style that made him the Dean of New York's folk singers. This three-disc set spans Van Ronk's career, beginning with early live recordings he made in 1958 in advance of his first Folkways album, through his final studio recordings in 2001 just months before his death.~AMG

Notes: This album, originally released in 1976, may or may not be, as annotator (and former Dave Van Ronk guitar student) Elijah Wald claims, "Dave's greatest single album" (frankly, Van Ronk has made so many albums for so many fly-by-night labels that it is hard to endorse so sweeping a statement), but it is certainly a very good one. Van Ronk had made various efforts in recent years to accommodate pop and rock music on his albums, but this one was a return to his usual repertoire of folk-blues tunes and jazz and ragtime transcriptions for guitar, with one Joni Mitchell song ("That Song About the Midway") and an original, the title song, thrown in. And it was a solo album on which Van Ronk sang and accompanied himself on acoustic guitar. Thus, it approximated what a good set in a club by this artist would sound like, minus the singer's witticisms, of course. Van Ronk never hid his influences, but he never sounded exactly like them, either, and on this album he was very much himself. Maybe it is his greatest single album; it is certainly one of his most representative.

Gormacha:
Alison McGuinness, Singer
Rohan Young, Bodhran
Dermot Rooney, Dobro/Guitar

Gormacha play original compositions and their own distinctive arrangements of early folk and blues classics and lesser known works. There was a range and a complexity to much of the early blues music. At its best it seemed almost to issue forth from musicians; more something they were, rather than something they did. Gormacha play in an authentic American blues style, drawing on influences from the 1920s and 1930s. Yet their music also reflects Irish and indeed Belfast roots.

Alison McGuinness imparts songs with an acceptance of the message, rather than a need to convince and she has the most beautiful upper-mid range quality to her voice. Her reading of Blues is both elegant and fluent. She opened for Joan Armatrading during the Irish leg of her 2013 tour, but gormacha is her first major collaboration.

Rohan Young’s bodhrán work is breathtaking and he has adapted his drum expertly to the very different textures and patterns required from blues, sitting in rather than always driving the beat. Rohan performs with many of the finest Irish traditional players and works regularly as a session musician. He designs and builds his own bodhráns and is a highly respected teacher of the instrument. Rohan is also a master of the PANart Hang, a rare Swiss made drum.

Dermot Rooney plays slide guitar in a traditional Blues style that is both distinctive and unique. His main instrument is a Dobro, but he also plays acoustic guitar. Dermot was a founding member of the celebrated Belfast Balladeers, which was created by Glenn Simpson. He was for a time resident guitarist at the Rotterdam’s Sunday Blues night and he later toured ‘Sean Nos meets the Blues’, a project based around his slide guitar work. At the time Siobhán Long of the Irish Times described him as ‘an astounding bottleneck blues guitarist’ whose ‘ style...is marked by a modesty and attention to the fine detail that sets him apart’. Dermot was a regular contributor to the Castlebar Blues Festival, which was established by the late Larry Roddy.

The percussive rhythms of slide guitar can work extremely well with bodhrán and in more sparse material the drum can provide a voice somewhat like a bass guitar. Gormacha has been about roots musicians finding meaningful ways to present traditional blues music afresh. With the rapport between Dobro and bodhrán established throughout a range of material, the vocal story is told in a beguiling, yet understated way. This first recording is entitled Libation.

Libation includes several original compositions and the album updates a number of traditional American blues pieces as well as a couple of folk songs. Those tracks with guitar and vocal or with guitar and bodhrán were recorded in the studio together live; and, for tracks involving all three, the instruments were recorded live and vocal thereafter. So gormacha are able to play all that is presented here live. In mixing and in mastering great care has been taken to retain the intimate experience of a live recording.

13. Piney Ridge (2:05)

“I’ve Got Something To Tell You” showcase’s Ilana Katz Katz’s unique improvisational blues fiddling alongside a collaborative, well-chosen group of accompanists. Ilana brings new life to the blues from an uncommonly heard source in the modern blues: the violin or “the fiddle” as Ilana likes to call it. This is a must-have record for any blues lover, especially those Ronnie Earl fans who will hear those definitive Earl licks alongside the fiddle, in this unusually refreshing recording.
Ilana’s passionate bluesy style fits perfectly alongside Ronnie Earl’s unmistakable masterful guitar playing on their instrumental numbers. It makes you wonder why you don’t hear more violin with the blues. Those bended notes on the violin tear at your heart, making you want more. On the tracks that feature the soulful Diane Blue on vocals, alongside Jesse Williams on bass, you’ll be glad to hit the repeat button. Diane digs deep when singing the cover of Robert Lockwood’s ‘Take a Little Walk With Me’ alongside Ilana’s bluesy fiddling and Earl’s stunning licks. But Diane isn’t the only singer on this record as Ilana’s heartfelt vocals on John Lee Hooker’s ‘Willow Tree’ work well alongside Ronnie Earl’s foot-tapping low-end blues.

And that’s only half of what you’ll hear on this record.

There are Memphis Minnie cover tunes sung by Marylou Ferrante whose skillful acoustic blues guitar, intertwined with Ilana’s blues licks, will make you appreciate this old-timey blues duet style. Marylou’s voice, featured on two Memphis Minnie numbers, is both strong and beautiful. Ilana and Marylou also play two instrumentals. The first is a slow blues tune called “Cruel Willie Blues” and the other is a more upbeat old-timey number that offers the old-timey fiddle/banjo combination – again with Ilana’s bluesy undertones on an Appalachian traditional called ‘Johnny, Don’t Get Drunk.’

But there’s one more pairing that is at least as good as the rest and fits well with the mix. The lush twin fiddles of Ilana and the wonderful Dotty Moore is a beautiful treat. There’s the “Old Medeira Waltz” that is filled with harmonies that sound like magic. Ilana even manages to sneak her blue notes – tastefully – into those tracks. And it works. Jesse William’s bass adds the perfect touch to round out this track. Dotty accompanies Ilana on yet another fiddle tune, much more driving, but no less harmonious.

The record ends with Ilana playing in an altered violin tuning that brings the instrument down low. It’s a solo version of the traditional ‘Piney Ridge.’ Ilana’s own ending to this song is a nice cap to the story that this record tells.

If your mind was caught up and mesmerized by the dancing pink elephants from Disney's Fantasia and the music that accompanied that mesmer, or your heart has a tendency towards the vaudevillian aspects of early American folk music, then have I got an album for you. Luke Winslow-King is an obviously talented lad who lends his hand to churning out tunes with a seemingly colorful history behind them. On his latest record Old/New Baby Winslow-King shows off his vocal abilities to great effect, all the while buoying the melodies with brilliant and classic instrumentation. The album starts off with a jazzy, hungover ditty called "As April Is To May" that recalls the great history of animated drunkenness. The song has a swing and mood that is very dark, yet lithesome and filled with syncopated bomp. Then Winslow-King sidesteps into more comfortable ground, picking up his dobro and invoking the spirit of American folk at its finest. "Shoeshine" has the kind of drooping rhythm and slippery guitar that makes players like Bill Morrisey so fantastic, and the song has horns that carry countermelodies through the background, imbuing the track with a surreal beauty. "Never Tired" is classic folk-hop, filled with snappy snare hits and great slide guitar work, as well as sing-songy lyrics that are almost silly in their earnestness. Winslow-King somehow takes the spirit of New Orleans and fuses it into his songs, imparting a ragtime breakdown into "Below" before dropping back to the matter-of-factness of "I'll See You When I Look At You", a song that is simple in its musical approach but contains an immense amount of folky beauty. Winslow-King's blending of slide guitar, horns, ukulele, and doghouse bass is instantly likeable and mostly traditional in its approach, fusing classic musical elements with a vigor that belies his Northern origins. Don't believe me? Take a listen to the cool jazz of "Birthday Stomp" or the gritty, delta-infused blues of "Bird Dog Blues" to form your own opinion of what this Michigan-born lad has in his musical blood. ~L. Keane

Winslow-King is from Cadillac, Michigan but he calls New Orleans home and has lived there since 2002 when his car was stolen in the French Quarter with all his musical equipment in it. At the time, the guitarist had already immersed himself in the academic study of jazz and composition. But, he found the emotional sterility and high-bandwidth musicality that informed so much bop and fusion jazz to be a dead- end, vapid and disconnected. He related instead to th folk music of the legendary Woody Guthrie and the cryptic deep blues of Mississippi John Hurt, music from, as writer Greil Marcus termed it, “the old, weird America.” Having his car stolen may, in fact, be one of the best things that ever happened to Luke Winslow-King.

He was quickly accepted into the music theory program at the University of New Orleans, and was eventually awarded a prestigious scholarship to study Czech classical music at St. Charles University in Prague. But while Winslow-King is certainly a heavy-hitter in terms of musical knowledge, instrumental prowess and compositional ability, his approach to the music of New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta is never dry, never academic. His compositions are not musicological set pieces, nor do they ever reek of the dusty utility of the affected and dolorous purist. Luke Winslow-King pulled off the considerable feat of creating something beautiful and unaffected and new from the plump and thickly intertwined history of the great American musics — New Orleans jazz and Mississippi Delta blues. On these gorgeous and glowing recordings made for Oxford Sounds, you’ll hear Luke Winslow-King — accompanied by the lovely washboard percussionist and back-up singer Esther Rose and double-bassist Cassidy Holden — deliver a number of tunes that reference ragtime, dixieland jazz, minstrel tunes, and 1920’s pop. That none of this music ever sounds even remotely like a revival act is testament to his considerable skill as a songwriter, arranger, guitarist and singer. The lyrical themes, too, harmonize with a 1920’s New Orleans aesthetic but they thankfully never veer into the execrable kitsch of, say, Leon Redbone or the ham-fisted hippie humorousness of early David Bromberg or Jerry Garcia solo records. Recorded by Andrew Ratcliffe at his superlative Tweed Recording Studio in Oxford, the session features several songs taken mainly from Winslow-King’s recently released album “The Coming Tide”. “Ragtime Millionaire” is as infectious as the title suggests, totally engaging. The song “The Coming Tide” is a real classic, simple and lovely, a wonderful and contagious tune with excellent accompaniment from Esther Rose. “Mississippi Slow Drag” is nothing short of stunning, though, a great ambling dance number delivered with faint ennui and replete with cool slide guitar phrases that recall the legendary Ry Cooder as well as that other under-heralded guru of pre-rock American guitar music, David Lindley. Of course, those guys got their licks from the Delta, too. ~Pat Cochran

Fred Bogert (Bass, Vocals (Background), Keyboards)
Cathryn Craig (Vocals (Background))
Michael Falzarano (Guitar, Mandolin)

Notes: His third album release of 1995, The Land Of Heroes was Jorma Kaukonen's first new solo studio album in a decade. In the meantime, he had been part of reunions of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, but The Land Of Heroes was in the tradition of Quah, Jorma, and Too Hot To Handle, mostly acoustic collections that combined new originals (vocal tunes and instrumentals) with remakes of older originals and covers of songs from the standard folk-blues repertoire. Kaukonen has largely shied away from doing solo work in his career, and even here he worked closely with Michael Falzarano, who co-produced, played guitar and mandolin, and had writing credits on three songs. The one new Kaukonen song with lyrics, "From The Land Of Heroes," was a moving tribute to his Finnish ancestors, making you wish that he would spend more time writing, even though it was nice to hear Airplane remakes like "Trial By Fire" and blues songs by the Reverend Gary Davis. The Falzarano material was pedestrian, however. ~ William Ruhlmann

Personnel:
Gus Cannon - Banjo, Vocals
Milton Roby - Washboard
Will Shade - Jug

Notes: In June of 1963, 79-year-old Gus Cannon went into the studio in Memphis to cut his first recording in close to seven years, all a result of the Rooftoop Singers having made his "Walk Right In" into a number one single. The producers didn't ask for too much out of Cannon, to judge from the results -- just that he sit there with his banjo and old friends Will Shade (jug) and Milton Roby (washboard) backing him, and do his favorite songs. He introduces a few of them in separately indexed spoken passages, and runs through them in leisurely if dedicated fashion: the title track (which is much bluesier than the hit in Cannon's hands), "Salty Dog" (the best track here), "Gonna Raise a Ruckus Tonight," "Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor," and "Crawdad Hole." The album is almost an audio documentary tour through different corners of Cannon's life and career that, ideally, might've run to several volumes. ~ Bruce Eder

Barry McCabe - The Acoustic Album

Size: 71,5 MB
Time: 30:47
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2010
Styles: Blues Folk
Label: Barry McCabe
Art: Front

02. Talkin' Woman Blues (2:03)
03. Arthur (2:52)
04. Adam & Eve (4:41)
05. Sheilagh (Live Version) (4:48)
06. I Wonder (Live Version With Pat Mc Manus) (4:36)
07. Mountains Of Mourne (Live Version) (4:59)
08. The Sunset Waltz (2:44)

The Acoustic Album came into being basically to give people a souvenir to bring home with them after Barry's acoustic concerts. However, word spread about this beautiful album and people around the world who have been unable to attend an acoustic show to date demanded that it be make available to the general public - and that's just what we've done.

It's a collection of previously released material and some never-before released material. Some of the tracks are live, which gives them a very special and intimate feeling. The styles covered are blues, Irish and singer-songwriter material. For example, Barry take one of his own favourite songs "Mountains of Mourne" (an old Irish song) and gives it his own interpretation and it is now a firm favourite in his acoustic shows. Likewise, he's taken one of his own songs "Sheilagh" and brought it back to it's more original setting (he writes all his songs on an acoustic guitar) and he also tells a short story about how the song came into being. He's joined on the song "I Wonder" by his cousin Pat McManus, well-known in his own right as a member of Mama's Boys & Celtus.

So from the opening track "Nobody's Girl" to the last piece of music "The Sunset Waltz" allow Barry to transport you magically to a place where an acoustic guitar and a human voice is all that is needed for him to tell you his stories.

Every now and again we stumble upon an artist through a song in a film, TV series or even an advertisement. In the case of Minnesota’s Charlie Parr, it is the last of the three. Remember that ad for a certain telephone telecommunications company that had some hip dude fold up his apartment? Well, the song in that ad was Parr’s ‘1922 Blues’. Soon enough the songman was supporting Paul Kelly and charming his way onto the stage of The Falls, Sunset Sounds, Southbound and Wave Rock. Several of his songs would also be included in the soundtrack to the 2010 Australian film, Red Hill. Influenced by the likes of Charlie Patton, Bukka White and Revered Gary Davis, Parr’s east coast blues style makes the 12-string guitar and banjo sing. The tour supports his latest release, 2013’s Barnswallow, but if you’re a fan you may also want to check out Charlie Parr: Last Night I Dreamed I Saw Paul Bunyan. Produced by Chaperone, in conjunction with The Meeting Team and Les Sangliers Associatifs, Last Night… is a unique multimedia package featuring a DVD of the film Meeting Charlie Parr, a vinyl LP containing 40-odd minutes of material recorded during the film production and an mp3 download card for the nine tracks.

The venerable Duluth folk musician Charlie Parr is set to release a distinctive new album on January 28, Hollandale, filled with unvarnished instrumental songs inspired by early 20th Century folk blues. The new collection, Parr's 12th full-length album, was engineered specifically for vinyl, and will be released by Duluth's own Chaperone Records.

Parr also had the opportunity of working with Low's Alan Sparhawk on the new record, and he has graciously shared a lovely new song from the record, "Barn Swallows At Twilight" that features the duo's deft collaboration.

"The songs will never come out that way again, but that's alright," Parr says about the improvisational heart of his new material. "They'll come out some other way, and that's what I love about this style of music. Without lyrics occupying the songs, the (challenge) was to create something that makes sense. I was more relaxed recording than ever before."

The sprightly music featured on Hollandale is driven forward by Parr's unique tunings on his Resonator and banjo, as the masterful musician crafts evocative story-lines in his songs even without singing a word. The stark, spacious wonder of Parr's surroundings color his new material, bringing his listeners with him to Duluth and beyond through his studied, expressive sounds.

Blind Arvella Gray - Dobro, Vocals

Notes: Blind Arvella Gray's real or imagined life story is, in some respects, a more complete creative statement than the actual music he made. Born Walter Dixon in Texas in 1906, he lost his eyesight and two fingers on his left hand due to a shotgun mishap (Gray's account of the incident involved several different plot possibilities), and he turned to street singing to keep things afloat. At some point in the 1940s he landed in Chicago, where he became a fixture at the Maxwell Street open-air flea market, playing his National Steel guitar and singing a mixed bag of blues, gospel, spirituals, work songs, and field hollers. By the early '70s he had released three 45s on his own Gray Records label, had four songs on a British import album called Blues from Maxwell Street, and had been featured in the video documentary And This Is Free. On September 22, 1972, he recorded his only album, The Singing Drifter, at Sound Unlimited Studios in Harvey, IL. The LP was issued on the tiny Birch Records label that same year, and quickly sold out its limited run in the Chicago area, where Gray's Maxwell Street presence had made him somewhat of a local celebrity. This reissue of The Singing Drifter on Conjuroo Recordings contains the complete original album, and adds four bonus tracks (plus an unlisted fifth bonus track, an alternate take of "Standing by the Bedside of a Neighbor"). Gray was hardly a skilled guitarist, as the missing fingers on his left hand limited him to slide playing, and he wasn't a particularly distinctive singer, either. What he had working for him was a certain joyful élan, which is why seeing him in person was undoubtedly more powerful than hearing him on record. The rhythms and vocal lines are very similar here track to track, which gives The Singing Drifter the illusion of being one long street song. The exceptions are a spirited rendition of what was Gray's unofficial theme piece, "John Henry," and a pair of field hollers, "Arvella's Work Song" and "Gander Dancing Song," where Gray sings accompanied only by his light handclapping. As an embodiment of the old street singer and songster tradition, Gray was undoubtedly a delight to see and hear at the market on a fine summer's morning, but a good deal of his presence is lost when all you have is his voice and guitar in the speakers. The Singing Drifter is certainly a valuable archival release, and those who saw him perform on Maxwell Street (Gray died in 1980) will treasure this disc for the memories it provokes, but it is truthfully a rather so-so musical document. In the end, it was Gray's physical presence as he stood playing that National Steel on the corner, and the long, storied journey (embellished or not) he took to get there, that was the real creative act.

Notes: Just three days after the death of his father, Memphis (and Muscle Shoals and Miami) music legend Jim Dickinson, Luther Dickinson opened the doors to the family s Zebra Ranch studio in Independence, Mississippi and recorded Onward and Upward, an album of gospel songs and hymns over the course of a few hours. Luther, one third of the North Mississippi All-Stars and now a member of The Black Crowes, was joined by an ad hoc group dubbed The Sons of Mudboy (an homage to his late father s influential rock band Mudboy and the Neutrons) who were all close to Dickinson the elder and wished to address his loss in a musical way. The Sons of Mudboy include two veterans of the original Mudboy: Sid Selvidge (guitar, vocals) and Jimmy Crosthwait (washboard, vocals). Also on the session were Jimbo Mathus (guitar, mandolin, banjo, vocals) formerly of the Squirrel Nut Zippers and of the South Memphis String Band, Steve Selvidge (guitar, dobro, vocals) and Paul Taylor (washtub bass) as well as vocalist Shannon McNally.
Inspired by Dickinson pater familias, Luther and company duplicated the sound of mid-Century era reel-to-reel filed recordings, using only two microphones plugged directly into a two-track ½ inch tape recorder: no mixing after the fact. Ardent s John Fry mastered the tracks directly from the two track to the mother stamper from which (vinyl) pressings were sourced. Most of the songs were nailed in just one take with just a few exceptions and those were completed in no more than three takes. That s just how we do it, Luther muses.
Onward and Upward will be released on November 10 by Memphis International, the label for which Jim Dickinson, as his performing alter ego James Luther Dickinson, released his last three album, Jungle Jim and the Voodoo Tiger (2006), Killers From Space (2007) and this year s Dinosaurs Run in Circles.
The songs are part of Luther s musical heritage. He grew up hearing Softly and Tenderly and Leaning on the Everlasting Arms at the Second Avenue Baptist Church in Memphis where his paternal grandmother played piano. He learned His Eye Is On The Sparrow from a hymnal that his father shared with him his mom, Mary Lindsay Dickinson, actually sang it to him in the hospital where her husband was being treated during his last days. Mississippi Fred McDowell s album Amazing Grace is the source of both Back Back Train and Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning and Luther had been known to perform them with the late Otha Turner who closed every show with Glory Glory, also included on Onward and Upward. Let It Roll is an original that sprang to Luther s mind at the moment he was loading in the analog tape machine on the day of the recordings. Another original, Up Over Yonder was written the day Luther s grandmother passed away.

“Brian Blain, born in rural Quebec and active in the music scene for forty years, possesses a “northern” style that gives him a cool edge that just can’t be found in any other artist. His easy blend of folk and blues is a running commentary on life as he sees it. He combines his sardonic wit with his soulful guitar skills and crafts it into a unique musical perspective…Want to know how folk blues is played in Toronto? “Colorblind” Brian Blain, will show you how it’s done. Overqualified for the blues? Maybe so, but this man’s music is real. It is unpretentious and understated, yet intelligent and gently intricate, reflecting the very fabric of life and the very essence of the blues, folk, country and yes, even jazz. “ – Veronica Timpanelli

I started this review with no idea who Shawn James was. I had no clue as to whether I was about to listen to Norwegian death metal or Dave Matthews. I had no preconceived notion about what it was that I was going to be reviewing. So when I say that I am impressed, blown away, and completely envious about the talent displayed on Shawn James’ debut album SHADOWS, rest assured I’m not engaging in any hyperbole whatsoever. This album is that good.

Shawn James deserves to be famous. His songwriting is clever and deep, his singing is superlative, and his songs are well-crafted and faultlessly executed. The production is top-notch, capturing atmosphere and the nuances of each instrument, without managing to sound overproduced or canned. What follows is my impressions of each song from the album. In any review that I’ve done so far, I’ve not ever gone so far as to encourage anyone to spend money. Times are tough for everybody. But if you love music that can stir your very soul, buy this album. Make this artist as famous as he deserves to be. Yes, I’m that impressed.

Best known for that ditty about camels, Maria Muldaur has since established herself as one of the finest folk/country/jazz/blues/gospel interpreters ever to have a Top Five single. After 26 years and 24 solo albums, Muldaur -- inspired by a trip to Memphis' Beale Street -- digs deep into her roots and pays tribute to the classic blues women of the '20s and '30s. Aided by the similarly inclined Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, and Alvin "Youngblood" Hart, Muldaur breezes through 14 tunes from icons Bessie Smith and Memphis Minnie, as well as obscurities from the Reverend Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, and Blind Willie Johnson. Keeping the unplugged accompaniment stripped way down to a single guitar or piano and occasional bass, Muldaur has room to maneuver her evocative vocals that shift from gritty groans to a high-pitched edgy trill. Far from a dry history lesson, these songs are performed with the strength and tenacity of the women who originally sang them. Whether spinning saucy, double entendre lyrics in "Me and My Chauffeur Blues" ("the way you ride so easy, I can't turn you down") or longing for her Southern home after moving north during the Depression in Bessie Smith's "Far Away Blues," the singer remains invigorated and inspired throughout. By returning to her late-'60s Jim Kweskin Jug Band coffeehouse days, Maria Muldaur has discovered her middle-aged oasis with Richland Woman Blues. And there's not a camel in sight. ~ Hal Horowitz

Internationally and nationally acclaimed Toby Walker has been hailed as a roots music fingerstyle guitar virtuoso who has toured the US, England, Wales, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland. Walker has been featured in the New York Times, the London Sunday Times, the London BBC, Sirius-XM radio and was the 1st place recipient of the International Blues Challenge Award given out by the Blues Foundation in Memphis TN.

Walker combines the styles of blues, ragtime, country, bluegrass, rock and old time jazz into his own unique style. Jorma Kaukonen of Hot Tuna and the Jefferson Airplane says "Flat out... you have to hear this great musician... I'm blown away" and has employed Walker to teach at his famous Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp for 6 years. In 2010 Walker won the NY Music Award for 'Best Instrumental CD,' sharing the honors with Mariah Carey, Rufus Wainwright and Judy Collins among many others.

Walker has recently released three instructional guitar DVD's for the world famous company Homespun Tapes, both of which have been getting rave reviews and his latest CD release 'Shake Shake Mama' has been hailed as a shining success in the genre of traditional blues recordings.
Carnegie Hall acknowledged his rare talents and hired him to augment and teach in their "American Roots" program aimed at honor level middle school students.

Toby’s passion for blues, rags, folk, and other traditional American music drove him to leave an apartment crammed full of recordings, books and instruments for the Mississippi Delta, Virginia and the Carolinas where he tracked down some of the more obscure - but immensely talented - music makers of an earlier era. He learned directly from Eugene Powell, James "Son" Thomas,Etta Baker, and R.L Burnside, among others.

The group "Cotton Belly's" is a formation of acoustic / electric "festive" blues. Their approach is to highlight the jovial facet of blues.

Grooving between old old blues and rock n 'roll of the 70’s, this young band was schooled by the street, bars and jam sessions. The Cotton Belly’s know how to play with talent and originality old standards by providing them with colors and freshness specific to the young generation. The "Cottons" also create their own songs… by the way you’re currently listening to them.

With their original compositions, between Blues and modern music, the Cotton Belly’s make every age dance. Their concerts bring happiness; as soon as « the little fellows of cotton » start playing, a great vibe radiates from the audience thrilling to the sounds of guitars and a gut-wrenching harmonica play.

Being among the eight finalists of the « Blues sur Seine » springboard 2007, the Cotton Belly's won three awards, including the Montreal OFQJ FestiBlues which enabled them to go play in Montreal in August 2008 and in many prestigious blues festivals in France (Cahors Blues festival, Blues sur Seine, Rendez-vous de l’Erdre, etc.)

The year 2009 was full of events since the group performed over 50 concerts of which famous openings (Calvin Russel, Mac Arnold…) and prestigious festivals (Montereau Confluence, Jazz à Vannes, l’Europa Jazz). They recorded their first album in October.

Notes: Harmonica player Sonny Terry and guitarist Brownie McGhee formed one of the most enduring partnerships in the blues, lasting from before the second world war into the 1970's. Although their partnership had some ups and downs, they were certainly on an upswing when they recorded these sides for the Sittin' In With label during the years 1948-1952. Later re-released on the Mainstream label on compact disc and mp3 this compilation finds the duo playing a nice mix of electric R&B and acoustic duo tracks. They draw on traditional blues standards for the bulk of the material on this album, but with Terry's swooping harp and distinctive yodel and McGhee's deftly plucked guitar, they add a new spin on tracks like “Mean Old Frisco" and “Sittin' On Top of the World." After years of just knowing this partnership as an acoustic duo, it is fascinating to hear them play in an electric blues context with with addition of bass, drums and occasionally piano. It turns them into a rollicking little combo that could have held their own at any juke joint in post-war Chicago. This is a great introductory album for those who are interested in the duo as it presents them in a couple of different contexts and allows the listener to enjoy the full range of their talents. Definitely one to keep an eye out for. ~ allaboutjazz.com
Plenty of delightful interplay between McGhee and Terry recommends these 18 1948-1951 sides for producer Bobby Shad for his Sittin' in With label, but they predate the duo's later folk period by a longshot. Back then, they were still aiming their output solely at the R&B crowd -- meaning "Man Ain't Nothin' But a Fool," "Bad Blood," "The Woman Is Killing Me," and "Dissatisfied Woman" are straightahead, uncompromising New York-style blues. ~ AMG

John Hammond has dealt with issues of authenticity and origin, both musical and personal, and moved beyond them. This 18-song session, recorded live in 1983 and recently reissued on CD, may have been his definitive session. It was certainly a masterpiece, with Hammond doing confident, thoroughly distinctive versions of signature Delta and Chicago blues classics by Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Son House and others. While "Dust My Broom," "Drop Down Mama," "Wang Dang Doodle" and all the rest have certainly been done to death, Hammond's spirited vocals, riveting guitar work on acoustic or bottleneck and his overall charismatic performances made them seem like fresh discoveries. ~Review by Ron Wynn

Steve Howell has created a gentle, Deep South-inspired acoustic troubadour daydream that is sure to appeal to a diverse set of country, blues and roots music fans. ~Living Blues

The blues evolved from solo acoustic music to include a wide stylistic umbrella. It is therefore cause for celebration when a contemporary artist opts to stake his emotional investment in timeless traditions resulting in deeply nuanced music. Initially inspired by Mississippi John Hurt, master Texas acoustic guitarist and singer Steve Howell performs a range of soulful music burning with an inner flame growing brighter with each listening, while revealing layers of expression often lost in high decibel electric blues.

His fourth release finds him in the estimable company of his friends Chris Michaels (electric and acoustic guitars, bass), Dave Hoffpauir (drums) and Jason Weinheimer (keyboards) who once backed the late, renowned Jim Dickinson. A unique set of ten modern and prewar covers constitutes an extraordinary musical ramble. The mid-tempo country blues “I Had a Notion” (1976) immediately confirms his true blues creds as a guitarist and singer as he casts an evocative rural spell on the Terry Garthwaite tune containing the line “Yes, I believe I will.” “Walk on Boy” (1960) by Mel Tillis has a lilting, olde tyme feel enhanced by nimble picking , the uncommonly supple groove of Hoffpauir and the fluid electric licks from Michaels in a classic country boast with lyrics like “Well, I left my mammy and pappy, just about the age of ten. I got me a job, workin’ on the levee, totin’ water for the hard workin’ men.” A somber mood is evinced on the shuffling “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning” (1928) by the legendary bottlenecker Blind Willie Johnson who sang sacred and secular music. Howell burrows into the profound Bible lyrics with his richly expressive tenor while Michaels first echoes the melody before improvising a raw, distortedsolo in dynamic contrast. On the“lonesome” lyrics of Dock Boggs’ melancholy, minor key “Country Blues” (1927), Howell “lives” through the dark temptations of life, the intertwining acoustic and electric guitars producing a web of swirling feelings.

Notes: Maria Muldaur's trilogy of old-timey blues and jazz releases for the Stony Plain imprint (she simultaneously records more contemporary music for the Telarc label) concludes with this appropriately titled set. Much is made in the liner notes of the veteran jazz/blues/pop/gospel singer being mentored in her early jugband years by no less of an icon than Victoria Spivey, so it seems Muldaur feels this tribute to the style and material of Spivey and other "classic blues queens" of the '20s and '30s is a sort of closure. It is also a history lesson, with detailed booklet information, some of it written by Muldaur, providing fascinating capsule biographies of the women whose music is covered here. Muldaur sure has the pipes and integrity for this approach, alternatively playful, sexy and downtrodden, and these dozen tracks find her inspired both by the strong, occasionally humorous material and the superb backing musicians in James Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band. There is no attempt to modernize these classic vaudeville and Dixieland era tunes; rather the intent is to be true to the original style with acoustic backing played in, and with, the spirit that made them so popular in their day. Muldaur invigorates the incessant double entendres that surely caused lecherous grins when listeners heard Bessie Smith's "Empty Bed Blues" or Spivey's "One Hour Mama" for the first time. Bonnie Raitt swings by for a cameo on Sippie Wallace's "Separation Blues," graciously not stealing the spotlight, but using her presence to pay tribute to one of her own inspirations. Other blues women covered here are Mamie Smith, Ma Rainey and Alberta Hunter. Muldaur's versions aren't simply covers, they reinvigorate the material, keeping the focus on the lyrics while Dapogny's group swings along. It's a fun, frisky and enlightening ride from a vocalist who has always promoted this music mixed in with her other styles, and an album that leaves the listener anticipating a follow-up.

Brother John Sellers - Sings Blues And Folk Songs

Bitrate: 320K/s
Time: 20:34
Size: 47.1 MB
Styles: Folk/blues vocals
Year: 1954/2006
Art: Front

[3:10] 1. John Henry
[4:26] 2. Farewell Work Life
[3:02] 3. Doretha Boogie
[3:41] 4. Boll Weevil
[2:57] 5. Two Little Fishes And Five Loaves Of Bread
[3:14] 6. Down By The Riverside

A bit tame even by the standards of the folk revival, this showcased Sellers as a smooth and accomplished presenter of folk, blues, and a bit of jazz. The singer mixed original compositions with standards like "John Henry," "Down By the Riverside," and "Nobody Knows the Trouble I Have Seen" on a set that seemed conscientiously programmed to demonstrate his versatility. The blues and folk numbers were graced by harmonica from Sonny Terry; the less successful jazzy efforts had accompaniment from a combo featuring the original Count Basie rhythm section.

[3:47] 15. Tennessee Blues
[4:05] 16. Thinking Of You
[3:23] 17. I Don't Do That Kind Of Thing Anymore

Janis Joplin may have gotten all of the fame and glory, but she was far from the only white female blues shouter to emerge from the San Francisco music scene of the mid-'60s; The Best of Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth is proof positive of that, providing an excellent introduction to one of the more sadly overlooked talents of her time and place. Despite any number of passing similarities to Joplin, Nelson sings with greater finesse; her style is more adaptable as well, capable of fitting comfortably into R&B, psychedelia, and pop ballads, all the while remaining grounded in classic roots music traditions. Highlighted by her perennial "Down So Low" -- subsequently recorded by everyone from Linda Ronstadt to Etta James -- this 17-track compilation also spotlights performances spanning from a wrenching cover of Little Willie John's "Need Your Love So Bad" to contemporary material like Steve Young's "Seven Bridges Road" and John Hiatt's "Thinking of You," offering a comprehensive overview of her earliest and most enduring work.

Notes: This superior release finds Maria Muldaur returning to her roots and paying special tribute to Memphis Minnie. Assisted by such notables as singer-guitarist Taj Mahal and guitarist Del Rey, Muldaur really excels on the vintage material and in this acoustic setting. Rather than sounding like a revivalist, her sensitive and witty vocals show a real understanding for the music and make her sound like a veteran of the era even though she is about 50 years too young! For listeners who might find it difficult to get into early blues due to the primitive recording quality, Maria Muldaur's Sweet Lovin' Ol' Soul will serve as the perfect transition. This is one of her finest recordings overall. ~ Scott Yanow

18. John The Revelator (Traditional) - 2:37
19. Michael's Kind Of Blues - 2:10
20. Amanda's Lullaby - 2:14

Notes: After several cassette-only releases this is Michael Hakanson-Stacy's first CD release. An all-acoustic recording, this album is divided between blues and folk, both of which Hakanson-Stacy seems to have a pretty solid handle on. A gifted picker, he excels on slide and resonator guitars and also receives guitar backing from singer/songwriter Brooks Williams on several selections. The more folksy numbers like "Down to My Soul" and "It Hurts Us So" resemble Sings like Hell-and Torn Again-period Peter Case; while the bluesier pieces invoke comparisons to Mississippi John Hurt and Leadbelly. Hakanson-Stacy wrote most of the songs on this album, and based on his style and delivery, it's evident that he's a student of not only traditional American guitar playing but the traditional songwriting nuances as well. This is an excellent release that would pave the way for several more such albums by Hakanson-Stacy in the coming years.

Notes: Brownie McGhee was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and grew up in Kingsport, Tennessee.[3] As a child he had polio, which incapacitated his leg. His brother Granville "Sticks" or "Stick" McGhee was nicknamed for pushing young Brownie around in a cart. His father, George McGhee, was a factory worker known around University Avenue for playing guitar and singing. Brownie's uncle made him a guitar from a tin marshmallow box and a piece of board.[4] McGhee spent much of his youth immersed in music, singing with local harmony group the Golden Voices Gospel Quartet and teaching himself to play guitar. A March of Dimes-funded leg operation enabled McGhee to walk. Read more

Notes: After appearing at the 1993 Lowcountry Blues Bash in Charleston, South Carolina, septagenarian blues singer Big Boy Henry retreated to a local recording studio with some of his musical buddies to record an impromptu album of Piedmont blues classics and new original numbers. Chicago Bob Nelson added his formidable harmonica; Dave Peabody (visiting from London) dazzled on acoustic guitar & backing vocals; Shrimp City Slim (Gary Erwin, who also produced the album) rocked the house on piano and washboard, with an ace rhythm section of Jay Niver on drums (from Blue Light Special) and Ted Donlon on bass (from The Flatcats). A further bonus: blues diva Sandra Hall makes her very first CD appearance, singing with Big Boy on several numbers. The fun lasted for two days and the CD was released in April, 1993. Considered to be the quintessential document of this beloved and influential bluesman, "Carolina Blues Jam" belongs in any serious collection of downhome blues.

Released: 2002

Notes: For some reason very few people know about this compilation. I'm not sure why, as it's definitely the best Leadbelly compilation on the market. Disc one contains most of the big hits, making it a sort of greatest hits album, while discs two and three contain more rarities and alternate takes. Note: Bill Sheffield, remember the name.
There are a bazillion folks out there, trying to pass themselves off as blues musicians, trying to pretend that they really understand what the blues are and trying to sell you the notion that they carry the very essence of the blues deeply buried inside their souls.
Once in a great while you are fortunate enough to discover someone who is not a pretender; you hear someone who understands the full range of the blues; someone who appreciates that, as Willie Dixon said, blues is just a slice of life. It is a rare treat to hear someone who knows that the blues encompass the full range emotions and experience that comes with life.
Bill Sheffield, remember the name, is one of those people.
I popped Journal On A Shelf in the CD player expecting to give a casual first listening while I puttered around with other chores. What I heard was such a surprise, was so true and honest, that I sat down and listened. I didn't get up until I had listened to the entire CD. Starting with Cherry Blossom Time, a crisp and clean Piedmont style piece with lyrics that celebrate the joy of being alive and ending up with the title cut, there isn't a throw-away cut in the whole set of tunes.
With 14 solid tracks it is difficult to identify two or three as the strongest for fear of giving the others short shrift but I have to mention New Tattoo" and I Don't Hate Nobody. New Tattoo is another tune that shows the blues can be up-tempo, humorous and light-hearted. I Don't Hate Nobody is as nearly a perfectly written song as you will ever find. The music is solid and skillful. The lyrics are tight and poignant. This song stands on it's own and justifies that entire CD.
One more tune that has to be mentioned is The Ballad of Brer Rabbit. This cut is something of a departure from the rest of the CD, with it's heavier electric sound using effects on the guitar and harp, but this updated retelling of Brer Rabbit is a great treat.
This is a mostly acoustic collection of blues and blues-based songs featuring mostly original tunes backed up by a group of musicians that know when to step out and when to lay back. Too often acoustic blues musicians try to fill out the sound with backing musicians that get in the way of the song. The resulting sound covers up some otherwise good songs but that is definitely not the case here. The arrangements and musicianship all work to let the jewels shine.
Mostly acoustic, some electric, mostly originals, some covers, Piedmont, slide, great vocals and excellent sidemen. If you want to hear what the blues can be today, then you need to hear Journal On A Shelf. ~ by Tampa Blue

Notes: Geoff Muldaur's 1998 album THE SECRET HANDSHAKE was a cause for celebration, coming as it did after a 17-year gap. The equally impressive PASSWORD came a scant two years later. He's joined on this one by an assortment of musical cohorts. Their appearances are subtle, always gracing the heart of the songs.
Charlie Patton's "Some of These Days" is rendered with light parlor room flourish, while Blind Willie Johnson's "Trouble Soon Be Over" is proudly funky, recalling Muldaur's time with Paul Butterfield in the band Better Days. The album closes with Muldaur and his guitar alone, singing the conclusion to his "Got to Find Blind Lemon," a saga which began on his previous release. As Richard Thompson has said, "There are only three white blues singers, and Geoff Muldaur is at least two of them."

CD Release Date - May 6, 2003
The fifth issue in Bluebird's Secret History of Rock & Roll project is the first by a single artist; the previous four have all been various-artists compilations. All feature excellent sound and decent if not exceptional packaging. This set, the complete RCA Victor recordings of Leadbelly, is up to that standard. All of the 26 tracks here were recorded in June of 1940 and released at various times as 78s by Bluebird. Some of the material includes virtually definitive versions of "Midnight Special," "Rock Island Line" (primarily because of the quality of the recording itself; the performance is awesome, but all of Leadbelly's performances of this song are), "Easy Rider," "Grey Goose," "TB Blues," "Don't You Love Your Daddy No More," the title track, "Stewball," and "I'm on My Last Go 'Round." This alone is reason enough for any fan of Leadbelly to purchase the CD, and these transfers are so fine, so warm, and so true sounding that they mark a new standard in remastering material from worn master tapes. (Give a listen to the back-to-back tracks "Good Morning Blues" and "Leaving Blues" -- they sound as if Leadbelly is hanging on your couch singing these songs.) The music here doesn't sound like archival material; it sounds alive and it becomes possible to hear what those who were initially knocked out by Leadbelly were able to experience. For anyone interested in Leadbelly's music, this is as essential as the Folkways recordings -- and in some ways, more so. ~ Thom Jurek

Take This Hammer

Appendix: An album that I have posted 13 09. 2013. Leadbelly - Take This Hammer obviously has the wrong image and some of the figures in notes, everything else is fine. I got this album from a friend of five or six years ago, why he has only 13 tracks I don't know. Maybe it's issue some smaller label from Eastern Europe or something.

11. My Grandmother's Cat - 17:49

Notes: Lot's of living room chatter between Rev. Gary Davis and the guests.
I have chosen to leave all that in for historical purposes.
This is a reel to reel recording made in 1968 at my home. We had Reverend Gary Davis over for dinner prior to a concert he was to perform the next evening. He was gracious enough to offer to play a few tunes for the guests after dinner. As you can hear there were quite a few people there sitting around our small living room while Gary performed. There was a great deal of interaction with Gary. Many of those present didn't know much about him and he answered our interesting or naive questions graciously interspersing his responses with some patter about each song he played. Obviously it was a wonderful experience and I'm glad I recorded it for the historical record. Later I learned more about Gary Davis and really could appreciate his importance in the world of music.
On CD 2, I have no idea what track 11 is (My Grandmother's cat). I have never heard that before but it sounds great.

I have no idea who wrote these words, and in whose home this event recorded. I have downloaded this album over the internet a few years ago.

In loving memory of Cyril Davies

Cyril Davies: Father of British Blues Harmonica

Born at St Mildred's, 15 Hawthorn Drive, Willowbank, Denham, Buckinghamshire, near London, he was the son of William Albert Davies, a labourer, and his wife Margaret Mary (née Jones). He had an elder brother named Glyn, and the family is believed to have come from Wales.
Cyril Davies began his career in the early 1950s first within Steve Lane's Southern Stompers, then as part of an acoustic skiffle and blues group with Alexis Korner.[citation needed] He began as a banjo and 12-string guitar player before becoming Britain's first Chicago-style blues harmonica player.[citation needed]
In 1962, Davies and Korner opened a club called the Ealing Club in London, adding bassist Jack Bruce, saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith and drummer Charlie Watts, to form the electric band Blues Incorporated. The album R&B from the Marquee features both Davies and Korner.
Many young musicians visited the Ealing Club and 'guested' with Blues Incorporated, including Rod Stewart, Paul Jones, Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards, Eric Burdon, Mick Jagger, Brian Jones and Ginger Baker.
Soon there was musical tension in the band, as some members wanted to play crowd-pleasers like Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley tracks while Cyril Davies was a blues purist who wanted to play what he saw as only genuine Chicago-style R&B. Following the dissolution of Blues Incorporated in October 1962, Davies formed the Cyril Davies All-Stars in November 1962 and recorded five tracks for Pye Records, who had announced an R&B label featuring music imported from Davies' favourite Chicago musicians ("Country Line Special", "Chicago Calling", "Preaching the Blues", "Sweet Mary" and "Someday Baby").[4] The original line-up, largely recruited from Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages, was later subject to frequent changes, particularly after Davies' death.
A number of 'R&B All-Stars' tracks with various line-ups, including Carlo Little, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Nicky Hopkins, are to be found on different record labels and anthologies - the name apparently continuing for several years. Those compilations include, A Shot of Rhythm and Blues (Sequel Records), Stroll On (Sony Music), and Dealing With the Devil (Sony Music).
Davies died of acute leukemia in January 1964.

Recorded in Kenton, Middlesex, August 3, 1961.
Directed by Cyril Davies
Released: Aug 3rd, 1961 (VJM, VEP10 )
Liner Notes by Brian Rust

Notes: Jug bands there have been a-plenty on records, made exclusively in America, chiefly in the cities of Memphis, Louisville, and Atlanta, mainly during the classic era of jazz from 1922 to 1931. There origin is as old as the blues; to the big companies operating in America today, they are not a commercial proposition any more, it seems. But this group, resident in London's folk-song club, the Roundhouse, in London's Wardour Street, is the first British jug band ever to make a record for commercial release.
The leader and general all-rounder (no pun intended!), Cyril Davies, used to play with our Steve Lane's Famous Southern Stompers and is the composer of that strangely attractive minor-key melody THE STAGGERS which has been recorded for us by Colin Kingwell's Jazz Bandits (VEP-11). On the session that produced the above tracks, he knelt before the microphone, the better to record the instrumental number SHORT LEGS SHUFFLE, which suggested its name. The rippling folksy banjo by petite Lise Turner, wife of the jug player Reg, is one of the most attractive and unusual sounds on any VJM record.
The first track on each side is a tribute to the Memphis Jug Band and its leader, Will Shade, who for nearly four years (February 1927 to November 1930) directed many sessions in Memphis and some in Atlanta, playing all the instruments used by Cyril Davies and Jeff Bradford. K.C. Moan was actually issued here on Regal-Zonophone in February 1937, but while a good sale of such a record could probably be expected now, it meant nothing to the public then. A more thoroughly satisfying blues performance has seldom been recorded, and this version echoes that mood.
W.C. Handy's HESITATION BLUES is a well-tried folk song, with countless variations on the lyrics. Lise Turner sings with Cyril Davies on this and IT'S THE SAME THING, and the effect is quite remarkably close to the sound of the country blues bands that made records "on location" in the South upwards of three decades ago.
This is not a skiffle group as the term as the term came to be misused by the Tin Pan Alley men in 1956 and a couple of years thereafter; it is a group of four enthusiastic and artistically sensitive people, mature in years, not teenagers, who have steeped themselves in their idiom with these happy results. ~ Brian Rust

Notes: Early in the morning of January 8th, 1964, I received a telephone call from John Martin: "I'm sorry to be the one who has to tell you this, John, but Cyril died last night." Cyril had been taken to hospital at six in the evening and within five hours was dead. I just could not believe it - he had been ill for some months, that I knew, but the suddenness of his death threw me. Some days before, as we were crossing the footbridge from our old stamping ground Eel Pie Island, he had said something that flashed back into my mind at that moment. "You know, John, I think this will be the last time I'll walk on this bridge".
As it happened, that particular evening at the Island was to be his last public appearance.
The first time I ever met Cyril Davies was a few weeks before the earliest tracks on this album were recorded. I was only a young kid just out of school at that time, just playing guitar and singing a little and very much in love with the blues. Although I had been listening to records by Bill Broonzy, and Muddy Waters among others since I was twelve, I had never heard English people playing and singing the blues until the evening I walked into the Roundhouse (the pub in Soho, not Arnold Wesker's ex-railway turntable shed) and heard Cyril and Alexis Korner. I used to go every Thursday evening and they would invite me to join them on the piece of lino between the piano and the bar, which served as the bandstand, encouraging me in my desire to be part of the blues scene. Those were great days, because apart from Cyril, Alex and myself performing, there were visits to the club by Big Bill, Muddy, Memphis Slim, Otis Spann, Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Derroll Adams and many more.
Of course, Cyril was better known then as a twelve-string guitarist than as a harmonica player. But later, in the days of the "Blues Incorporated" and the All Stars", he never played guitar on stage, so naturally became absolutely identified with harmonica. I have always thought it a great pity that his guitar playing was never utilized on his recordings for Decca and Pye. However, this situation can now be rectified as we listen to this collection of memorable recordings thanks to Doug Dobell.
As I listen, I look back and think of the little black Alsatian Uschi (still alive and well and monstrous in Kent) that he gave me from the litter of his scrapyard watchdog Kim. The entire barful of dockers on Teesside for whom he bought drinks all night. The inimitable way he curbed a tribal civil war in the back of a Timpson's coach outside Middlesbrough Infirmary. My sudden arrival back to sobriety one night in Burslem with a well-aimed harmonica hurled at my head from the stage. But there's not enough room on this sleeve to tell it all. Perhaps Doug might let me record an album one day so that I can tell you the WHOLE story of the Legendary Cyril Davies. ~ Long John Baldry

10. Bad Luck Woman (3:01)

Miss Quincy has spent all winter holed up in her log cabin in Northern Canada where she wrote and recorded her new record “Your Mama Don't Like Me”. This toe tappin' collection of original tunes showcases Miss Quincy singing her brand of Grassroots Gypsy Blues and is due to be released on June 15, 2010.

Miss Quincy does not fit the classic Singer/Songwriter mold. She's upbeat, original, and edgy. Her music takes you to a dimly-lit smoke-filled blues joint and even sometimes cross into vaudeville territory. "Well, if I had to describe this album", says Miss Quincy, "I would have to call it 'back porch brothel blues', or something equally backwoods and whiskey soaked

The recording of “Your Mama Don't Like Me” took place in Miss Quincy's cabin during a cold snap where temperatures dropped below -40 degrees. If you listen closely you may just hear the crackling of a wood stove or the swish of a whiskey bottle behind a group of musicians playing like their lives depend on it all key elements in the making of this album. The album is worth noting not only for the quality of Miss Quincy's original compositions and soaring vocal performances, but also for the talent of some of Canada's finest roots musicians. Craig Korth, banjo player extraordinaire from one of Canada's favourite festival bluegrass bands Widow Maker makes several appearances, as does renowned violinist Josh Giesbrecht from the wonderfully weird Resurrect Christ Foundation, another festival phenomenon. Carrying the low end on upright bass is Mr. Peter Mynett from Victoria BC's Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra.

Miss Quincy has composed songs ranging from the dark and lighting fast black-grass tune titled, "Dead Horse" to the song, "Your Mama Don't Like Me" with a vaudevillian flair. You can hear the drunken piano player Glennn Mitchell (Russell Jackson Band) pounding out the blues and Miss Quincy wailing on the blues harp. There are stories full of heartache, a little love, and a lot of whiskey - all undeniably toe-tapping, hip-shaking, and filled with Miss Quincy's signature vocal prowess and vintage flair.

Miss Quincy is of a new breed of DIY musician who is fiercely independent, driven, and committed to a grassroots musical approach. Make sure to catch a show and pick up a signed off-stage copy of her new album as Miss Quincy graces festival stages, bar rooms, street corners, and living rooms in Canada and the UK this spring and summer.

Leadbelly - Take This Hammer

13. Alberta - 3:12

Personnel:
Leadbelly - Guitar, Vocals
Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet - Performer

Notes: Although the gimmicky subtitle of this release is "The Secret History of Rock & Roll," this music stands apart from merely being an influence on rockers 20 years later. The valuable release has all of the music recorded by folk/blues singer-guitarist Leadbelly during two sessions he cut for Victor in 1940. Thirteen of the 26 selections have Leadbelly joined by the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet and these were originally released as Midnight Special. The other 13 numbers are solo vehicles for Leadbelly that range from traditional story-telling to blues; highlights include the classic "Good Morning Blues," "TB Blues," "Sail On Little Girl, Sail On," "Alberta, "Roberta" and "Alabama Bound." Although a few of the numbers are a bit primitive, this set is an excellent introduction to the historic and wide-ranging music of Leadbelly.

Notes: Recorded live in Bremen, Germany, Beautiful Isle of Somewhere documents the re-emergence of Geoff Muldaur to the concert stage. After having spent most of the '80s and '90s concentrating on film scores, the business side of music, and computer-related projects, Muldaur returned to the studio and released 1998's acclaimed The Secret Handshake. The success of this disc prompted a small tour of Europe that led him to the Moments club in Bremen, where this intimate solo performance was recorded. With his gentle guitar and beautifully weathered voice, Muldaur moves effortlessly through a comfortable collection of folk-blues standards and originals for a subdued yet appreciative German audience. Songs selected for this set provide a nice variety that crosses through different factions of blues music, with Muldaur's voice easily matching the tone and style of each composition. Unlike some of today's blues singers who lick and trill their way though lyrics, his unadorned vocal work quietly conveys the ghostly character in Walter Davis' "I Can't See Your Face Anymore," while coming vibrantly to life on a rockin' version of Sleepy John Estes' "Drop Down Mama." His pipes get a workout on Vera Hall's "The Wild Ox Moan," a highlight from The Secret Handshake, where he caps off phrases with a tripping falsetto "moan." Even more so in concert than in the studio, Muldaur is able to showcase his mastery and passion for the blues, and this warmly affective performance stands as undeniable proof. AMG

Eric & Suzy Thompson continue their long-standing love affair with Southern music of the 1920's and 30's, at the intersection of country blues, old-time string band music, and Cajun songs. "Dream Shadows" takes a stripped down approach to production – no big name special guests, no fancy arrangements, just old time music the way Eric & Suzy play and sing it whether at home or on stage, using guitars, fiddle, Cajun accordion, banjo, mandolin, etc. This is roots music from an era when record companies were still willing to record quirky, intensely personal and exotic sounds and had not yet adopted the "one size fits all" philosophy.

Personnel:
John 'Spider John' Koerner - guitar, vocals
Tony 'Little Son' Glover - harmonica (1,4,13)

Notes: The dark glasses and Phillies ce-gar on the cover photo of Spider Blues can't begin to hide the barely-contained raw energy of the young man behind them. It's easy to see that Spider John Koerner has the world by the tail, and is ready to jump head first into whatever comes next. Jump, flash, snap, pop, and strut is exactly what he does on this mostly-solo album, with sharp, percussive country blues guitar picking and tight, energetic vocals, complemented nicely by Tony “Little Son” Glover’s harmonica on three outstanding numbers including the opener, Good Luck Child, and the title cut, Spider Blues.

Hearing this album for the first time nearly forty years ago, the only stuff that came close to it for me on the “can’t-sit-still” scale were the early works of Taj Mahal, John Mayall, and Cream. For the sheer punch of an unaccompanied performance, though, I still haven’t found anything to touch it since then. It’s incredible that this nugget hasn’t been re-released on CD. Aside from the history, there’s nothing dated about it; and it richly deserves a newer, wider audience with the same kind of juice that it exudes. ~ Pap-a-lap. Apr 26, 2009 (discogs.com)

Notes: Award winning Blues artist, Brian Fraser, releases his 3rd, and most complete solo album to date.

Brian hails from the Geelong region of Victoria and was the former lead singer and guitarist with popular regional Victorian act, Turning Blue.

As the title states, Brian's new album is filled with both fingerpickin' guitar playing and Blues, all sung in his easy-going vocal style. Also of note is Brian’s moody slide guitar playing (check out his version of Driftin’ Blues).
Brian’s own observations range from the joys of life as a touring musician (10 O’Clock Call) to the protest at the demolition of a historic homestead (Well's Station). All are slices of the life of a travelling musician, which Brian most certainly is. His touring schedule is exhaustive and takes him to all corners of Australia.

Recorded by award winning Blues recording engineer, Robert B. Dillon, "Fingerpickin' Blues" is an album that highlights the talents of yet another major Australian Blues talent.

Notes: If the mention of "Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas" starts you humming "Barbecue" or chuckling at the Riverbottom Nightmare Band, then you are a tailor-made fan for the Juggernaut Jug Band. Even if you have no idea who Emmet Otter is (shame on you!), you still need to hear Jugstaposition, simply because you'll walk away with a bigger smile on your face.
The JJB has been around in various incarnations for about 30 years, and anyone remotely familiar with the Louisville music scene knows the JJB's reputation for providing good music and a good time. That joyous feeling is captured well on Jugstaposition. The quartet - Gil Fish, Roscoe Goose, World Wide Webb and Big Daddy - throw a smorgasbord of musical styles and instruments into the pot and cook up a mighty tasty musical stew.
The band's throwback sound is in perfect harmony with the style made popular on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack, which will hopefully be an avenue for the JJB to welcome new fans. First-timers will find a lot to their liking: the peppy "Old Joe's Hittin' the Jug," the sweet-sounding "Hamburger Pie" and even a creative rendition of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row," part of which is sung to the tune of "Ghostriders in the Sky."
Don't think for a second that there's anything gimmicky about the band's musical repertoire. The JJB is able to combine a freewheeling spirit and infectious looseness with seriously honed musical abilities. The result is a music experience that's not only fun, but is well done. It's refreshing to listen to a band of any musical style that can have this kind of serious fun. ~ Kory Wilcoxson (louisvillemusicnews.net)

This album contains 2 never before recorded originals! 8 (total) songs never recorded before by "The Book"! and 7 'covers' of old hit tunes that are some of Roy's favorites dating back to his early years. This disc includes lots of stories, a few good laughs, and plenty of guitar pickin, with 72 minutes in all for your listening pleasure, and a a short introduction by Jorma Kaukonen!

"These songs are all favorites of mine. Some I have never recorded before, some I learned from my early out-of-print albums and some were "revealed to me." Every song has a story of how I came to choose it or, in some cases, how it came to choose me! Sharing these memories with all of you is my greatest pleasure.
Forty years ago, traveling with Reverend Gary Davis, struggling to learn a new chord or melody, I could never have imagined I would become a "known person" and that this adventure would lead me to perfoming in front of enthusiastic audiences around the world. I could have never dreamed that many of my heroes would end up being my pals.
I do hope this album will give you a glimpse of how I feel about my music, my audience and my involvement with the Fur Peace Ranch. I am very pleased with this project and am proud to let you experience some of the joys of my world, which could not exist without you." (~Roy Bookbinder)

"I met Roy a couple of years ago at a Jorma Kaukonen guitar workshop. I'd never heard of him before and was delighted to make his acquaintance and hear his music. Great guitarist, expressive vocalist, and man, what a storyteller! This live album is one of my few go-to favorites, for both the music and his stories. I doubt anyone would be disappointed after buying it." (~~Customer Review)

Josh White - Empty Bed Blues

Styles: Folk-Blues, Blues Revival
Released: 1962/2003
Label: Sepiatone
File: mp3@320K/s
Size: 84.1 MB
Time: 36:45
Art: front

1. Empty Bed Blues - 3:18
2. Mother On That Train - 3:42
3. Bottle Up And Go - 2:25
4. Backwater Blues - 4:31
5. Baby Baby Blues - 5:30
6. Lord Have Mercy - 4:00
7. Home In That Rock - 2:37
8. Paul And Silas - 2:28
9. His Eye On The Sparrow - 5:27
10. That Suits Me - 2:45

Notes: Empty Bed Blues was Josh White's farewell recording for Elektra, the record label that helped (re)introduce him to the mainstream during the height of the '60s folk revival. To look at the sexy -- and risqué for 1962 -- cover, one would think that half of the tunes, stately renditions of gospel songs, wouldn't be at home on the album. But considering that the ribald, innuendo-laden first side is belied by White's silky voice and mellifluous guitar, he almost makes the juke-joint rave-ups sound like show tunes. Given his role as elder statesmen of acoustic blues, you'd be forgiven for thinking that White didn't need to be rediscovered as such, but sadly he did. Although considering this album, "reinvented" might be a better word. From the man who popularized "Strange Fruit" -- perhaps the saddest, most poignant protest song ever -- one wouldn't necessarily expect such explicit sex songs. Whether it's a tune like the title track or "Backwater Blues," White reaches back to the lowdown, alpha-male origins of the blues, but comes off a little too much like a cabaret entertainer. His playing retains the delicate precision that found him oft-imitated, and the backing, mostly by just Bill Lee on upright bass, is always tasteful. Still, it's a mellow set, and one partly done with a wink -- considering it was among the last albums that White made before he died. It seems too minstrely of an end for someone who's scope and influence on modern blues can't be overstated. ~ Alex Stimmel

Notes: Album from Saga Blues Collection, Vol. 34
Josh White and Blind Blake were the fathers and pioneers of Piedmont blues. The ten first songs included on the CD show this excellent musician on his most bluesy side, only playing his own guitar or backed by Al Hall, Jack Fallon, Sonny Greer or Phil Seamen, all them reputed musicians at that particular time. The other ten songs that that complete the CD, give us White’s most religious aspect he used to combine with folk singer skills in songs like “John Henry”, “Saint James Infirmary” or “The House Of The Rising Sun”, all them recorded between 1933 and 1956. GREAT Dusty Blues CD review
Josh White was a key figure in the evolution of the folk and blues music revivals, a brilliant guitarist and dashingly sexy cabaret star who for three decades was the world's most popular acoustic blues performer. After a childhood leading blind street singers through the South, Josh was a popular recording artist in the 1930s golden age of acoustic blues; then in the 1940s he became the first bluesman to capture a large mainstream audience. Though his smooth, polished style is quite unlike the harder-edged approach that many people now consider basic to blues, his unique, lyrical guitar work and soulful singing made him a formative influence on the international folk scene.
Born in South Carolina, White spent his childhood as a "lead boy" for traveling blind bluesmen. In the early '30s he moved to New York and became a popular blues star, then introduced folk-blues to a mass white audience in the 1940s. He was famed both for his strong Civil Rights songs, which made him a favorite of the Roosevelts, and for his sexy stage persona. The king of Café Society-also home to Billie Holiday--he was the one bluesman to consistently pack the New York nightspots, and the first black singer-guitarist to act in Hollywood films and star on Broadway. In the 1950s, White's bitter compromise with the blacklisters left him with few friends on either end of the political spectrum. He spent much of the decade in Europe, then came back strong in the 1960s folk revival. By 1963, he was voted one of America's top three male folk stars, but his health was failing and he did not survive the decade.
