Notes: With his new album "Fast Texas", Steve James pays tribute to the state that has been his home for over 25 years. The Texas experience is chronicled in James' original songs-from the animated title track to the brooding "Freestone County Blues". Also included are adaptations of songs by Lone Star roots regents like Hop Wilson, Milton Brown and Little Hat Jones.
To get his characteristic bare bones production values realized, Steve once again enlisted the help of some of Austin's best recording and mastering engineers, and used a small arsenal of acoustic and resophonic instruments (including a new custom-made 12 string guitar). "Best instrumental and vocal sounds I've gotten in the studio to date." opines James; whose guitar, slide guitar, mandolin, banjo and vocals are augmented on selected tracks by the sonorous string-work of Del Rey, the sinewy steel and Dobro of Cindy Cashdollar, and the soulful voices of Ruthie Foster and Cyd Cassone. Enjoy "Fast Texas"...and take your time doing it.
Since the release of his "Boom Chang" CD in the summer of 2000, Steve James has toured the US coast to coast with side trips to Mexico and Canada for festival dates, and three tours of Europe, which took him from the UK to Hungary and from Scandinavia to Italy and most recently, a month long tour in Australia. In June of 2001, he was heard on over 450 radio stations worldwide when he appeared on "A Prairie Home Companion" in Minneapolis, MN.
Acoustic Guitar/String Letter Press published "Inside blues Guitar", Steve's second book from them, along with several articles and lessons. "Learn to Play Blues Mandolin", featuring Steve with guitar support from john Sebastian, was added to the Homespun Tapes catalog alongside his previous guitar video. In addition, Steve taught at numerous guitar clinics and music camps including The Swannanoa Gathering Guitar week, Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch, the Centrum country blues and Heritage Week…and as host of his own guitar program at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Austin Texas even gave Steve his own "official Steve James day".
Steve James' guitar, slide guitar, mandolin and banjo were heard - live and in the studio - in support of artists as various as Kevin Russell of The Gourds and Howard Armstrong, senior inventor of Afro-American string band music. Steve appeared on compilations including the Grammy nominated "Preachin' the Blues… The Music of Mississippi Fred McDowell" (for which Steve also wrote the liner notes). His own retrospective CD, "Not For Highway Use… Austin Sessions 1988-95" is also now available from his website.
Steve's tour calendar for the coming year already includes multiple tours of Europe and North America and another West Coast tour with stage and studio duet partner Del Rey. The duo played to packed houses in Texas and on the West coast during spring/summer of 2002 and has recently recorded a 9-song (do-it-yourself) CD entitled "Twins", featuring a blend of classic and original tunes with guitar, slide guitar, uke and mandolin aplenty. ~ burnside records

Note: Utilizing a jug band of fellow Austinites Danny Barnes (tenor guitar and banjo) and Mark Rubin (stand-up bass and Sousaphone -- both of the Bad Livers) and harpist Gary Primich on some tracks, James sounds more mature here, evidenced by six originals (the John Hurt-esque "Talco Girl" is particularly nice) and one collaboration with bassist/songwriter Sarah Brown ("My Last Good Car") and effective rather than affected vocals. Stellar guitar throughout, with an added treat: James's blues mandolin on "Midnight Blues."

Note: A rarity in today's field of acoustic blues pickers; a guitarist with encyclopedic knowledge who never sounds academic. James embraces a wide scope of fingerpicking styles -- Piedmont school ragtime, hokum ("Huggin' and Chalkin'"), country (Sam McGee is the source of two tunes here), and slide (his showstopping take on Sylvester Weaver's "Guitar Rag") with super technique, humor, and a relaxed ease that borders on cockiness. Only one original here, but that situation was to be rectified on Steve's follow-up.

Del Rey, from Seattle Washington, is a complex, pianistic guitarist, described as "a combination of Bo Carter and the Andrews Sisters"(Observant Fan).
These two powerful exponents of American vernacular guitar-playing, have joined forces to make music testament to the hillbilly/smarty-pants/country blues aesthetic. Sharing a sense of humor and a similar manic intensity, their duets are smart, funny and full of instrumental virtuosity. Del Rey doubles on resonator ukulele and Steve James is known for his "noble savage" mandolin style.
Longtime colleagues and collaborators at festivals and workshops worldwide, they met in 1992 in Santa Cruz,. Their friendship developed over many years in different places around the world, as they exchanged stories and hot tips in various hotel bars. They kept running into one another, sharing double-bills in Belgium, at the Gloucester Blues Festival in England, until 2001, at the Port Townsend Country Blues Workshop they got serious about playing and recording together. Audiences and critics have responded so favorably that they've been spending the majority of their time on the road playing as a duet.
With nine solo albums between them, they have recorded a two cds together, "Tonight" (2004) and "Twins" (2002).They have enjoyed critical acclaim for their work with singer Maria Muldaur as well. They channel Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe (plus Joe's mandolin playing brother, Charlie McCoy) on her 2005 release "Sweet Lovin' Ol' Soul". Recent shows include King Biscuit Blues Festival. Merlefest, Waterfront Blues Festival and A Prairie Home Companion.

Notes: James' first album was a solo effort; his second added a small combo. Art and Grit, his third, is a virtual celebration of acoustic string instruments. The Austin "jug band" of American Primitive -- James, Danny Barnes, Mark Rubin, and Gary Primich -- reunites on three cuts and forms the nucleus of three others. Guitar virtuoso Rob Brozman and Asleep at the Wheel's Cindy Cashdollar make guest appearances, and all told there are no fewer than eleven different instrument lineups on the disc, with guitars of many types (standard, slide, Hawaiian, and tenor), banjos (6- and 4-string), and mandolins presented solo and in various combinations. Most memorable cuts are James' delightfully archaic banjo rendition of the century-old "Buddy Bolden's Blues" and the joyfully clanging triple guitar attack on "Downbound Train" (an obscure Chuck Berry album cut, based on an old temperance song). Recording quality is exceptionally vivid, capturing the distinctive timbre of each instrument and making Art and Grit an old-timey blues lovers' delight.

Notes: This superior release finds Maria Muldaur returning to her roots and paying special tribute to Memphis Minnie. Assisted by such notables as singer-guitarist Taj Mahal and guitarist Del Rey, Muldaur really excels on the vintage material and in this acoustic setting. Rather than sounding like a revivalist, her sensitive and witty vocals show a real understanding for the music and make her sound like a veteran of the era even though she is about 50 years too young! For listeners who might find it difficult to get into early blues due to the primitive recording quality, Maria Muldaur's Sweet Lovin' Ol' Soul will serve as the perfect transition.
